Review: Dell XPS 13 2-in-1

Following after the success of XPS 13, Dell had recently welcomed the XPS 13 2-in-1, the world’s smallest 13-inch 2-in-1.

The laptop offers a 360-degree hinge for multiple productivity and viewing options using Continuum, up to 15 hours of battery life and eye-popping clarity with a gorgeous QHD+ InfinityEdge touch display—another first for a 2-in-1.

With a list of stunning features on paper, let us check how Dell’s latest 2-in1 laptop performs.

The Dell XPS 13 2-in1 is indeed attractive from every angle as its design looks exactly how such a device of its kind to look.

From a distance, it is identical to the standard XPS 13 laptop, but once you come closer, you would see Dell has given a 360-degree hinge on to the 2-in-1

Going in-depth to the XPS 13 2-in-1 design, in particular just below the Dell’s 13-inch InfinityEdge screen lid, the location of webcam is placed right in the centre unlike the standard XPS 13 where it was pushed off to the left of the screen.

Meanwhile, Dell has maintained the standard design XPS 13 design on the 2-in-1 which include checkered, carbon fibre keyboard deck, brushed aluminium screen lid and underside, backlit keyboard, glass-coated trackpad – has gone unchanged.

However, being a 2-in-1, this version sports dual screen hinges that shine with same aluminium the rest of the laptop does.

Weighing at only 2.7 pounds and measuring at 0.32 to 0.54 inches, makes the XPS 13 2-in-1 as Dell’s thinnest and lightest XPS product in the market.

With a 1.2- GHz Core i5-7Y54 processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GM PCle solid state drive, the XPS 13 2-in-1 works well with as my everyday machine which includes more than 20 tabs open on Google Chrome, streaming songs on Spotify or watching movies on Netflix and some photo-editing on Adobe Photoshop.

However, in terms of gaming, it is not recommended to play anything other than casual games on the XPS 13 2-in-1.

Battery Life

The XPS 13 2-in-1 runs on a 46-watt-hour battery where it can last about more or less 8 hours. That being said, it involved continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi which includes streaming music on Spotify.

It is possible to hit the 10-hour mark if the screen brightness is managed more conservatively and liberally use the Battery Saver features on Windows 10.

Nevertheless, do expect a drop in performance while using the Battery Saver tool.

Tablet Mode

The viability of the 2-1 in tablet mode may need some time to get used to as a convertible hybrid (bent 360 degrees), feeling the keyboard beneath your fingers could be uncomfortable.

What’s good is that the keys and trackpad deactivate quickly where you won’t have to worry of accidentally inputting any keys. Meanwhile, the fingerprint sensor on the keyboard deck works well.

Using the XPS 13 2-in-1 to watch videos, doodling or a drafting device work due to its lightweight built and its sharp and colour-rich touchscreen display.

As for pen support, it is a bummer that Dell did not include its own Active Pen as part of the package. If it is something that you need, you will have to purchase it separately.
